The Sierra Nevada is known for its rich rural character, but now more than ever, we face challenges that threaten our natural landscapes, resources and way of life. To meet current challenges, the Alliance is forging new ground in the Sierra by encouraging Sustainable Communities. The goal of the Sustainable Sierra Communities program is to foster and support local actions and planning that establish building blocks for more resilient, thriving Sierra communities. Through on-the-ground projects, model programs, publications, workshops and events, we empower people and organizations for a sustainable future.
"When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it connected to the rest of the world."
John Muir, Sierra Nevada naturalist
This program uses two main strategies to achieve the program goal:
+ Sierra-friendly Living Campaign
Local actions with on-the-ground projects, workshops, events, model programs and resources such as guides and other publications to help Sierrans live more sustainably. Currently the program is focused on addressing watershed health and energy and water conservation and efficiency.
+ Seeds for Sustainability Campaign
Working with Sierra communities to collaborate on a vision for a sustainable community and the plan to achieve that vision. The Alliance is currently working with the City of South Lake Tahoe Sustainability Commission to learn more about the process of community visioning and sustainability planning.
